The Truth about Canadian National Health Systems: Two Doctors Who Have Run Canadian Med. Assn.
Two evenings ago, Fox News broadcast the announcement of the appointment of the woman doctor who is the current head of the Canadian Medical Association to run their National Health System. Dr. Doig is her name and on being interviewed, her first quote was to say that this system was in meltdown, a catastrophe. This obviously sent Obamacare’s leftist champions here into a paroxysm of anger.
Dr. Doig indicated that the system was essentially bankrupt by any other view. She went on to indicate that by objective medical criteria, the system is paralyzed, with terrible queues, high hospital infection rates, lower cancer survival rates than most of the western world, and more. She was followed by another commentator, a Vancouver based orthopedic surgeon who had her job before her. What he said struck fear into any rational person listening.
This surgeon said that the Canadian Health System now had over 1 Million people awaiting surgery, and an additional 1 Million awaiting specialist doctor visits that would also probably lead to more surgery. Wait times are the longest in the Western World, the product of what he described as rationing. In a recent rating of 29 countries for quality of care in the West, they were 26th, and for value of service versus cost expenditures, they were dead last.
Then he told the interviewer that the current expenditures in support of this system constituted 42% of the total budget of the Canadian Government. That sealed it.
The statistics he cited for their hospitals and cancer care were verified by an independent examiner who compared the Canadian and UK health care systems. The statistic for prostate cancer survival was not too bad 95% versus 100% in the US. Breast Cancer was another story entirely, with their survival rate being 23% lower than the US, and comparable to the UK. The UK NHS employs 1.4 Million people in their system, literally the third largest employer in the world, after the Chinese Communist Army, and the Indian Natiional Railway System. The UK spends 50% of its budget on their National Health System.
No matter how you view this, I don’t think those American satisfied with their health care are going to opt for second class care to cover illegal aliens, or those who chose not to buy health care insurance. Toss in a lower cancer survival rate and unreasonable delays in delivery of care, and we will have a revolution on our hands. If the Democrats try a legislative trick to pass this bill by breaking it in two, they should be broken in two in 2010, then deep fried in PC Peanut Oil.
We need interstate insurance carrier competition, and certainly tort reform, accompanied by citizen rather than legislative review boards. This is being pushed like it was the second coming, with tactics not seen across the board since the emergence of fascism. Be heard, or be square and dead. In the latest poll, under 45% of UK citizens rated the NHS as excellent.
