"I think of a hero as someone who understands the degree of responsibility that comes with his freedom."
~ Bob Dylan

Thank you for an incredibly well-written and honest article on Patrick Byrne in the just released April 2005 issue of Connect-Utah. It's about time someone (besides the few of us "in the know") told the truth about Dr. Byrne, and his honorable crusade against massive fraud in our stock market. It is too often that those with the courage to speak out against wrong are vilified by whose who stand to lose the most from the righting of those wrongs. Patrick Byrne is one such man.

I've been reporting on naked short selling for over two years, and am unfortunately one of the "few select people who know how widespread the problem could be" that you mention in your article. I've written over 60 articles on the topic of stock market fraud, all while running my own business at the same time. I've come to know and admire Patrick greatly over the past year, he has offered his time, energy, and resources to a cause that is far greater than any of us, and his dedication and high level of visibility has moved our efforts forward in ways that none of us could have accomplished without him.

This is a mission undertaken by the most unlikely and motley group of individuals you will ever meet, who have only one thing in common: an undying passion for doing the right thing, and for seizing one of those rare chances to literally affect our country's future in a positive and lasting way. It has been an honor and a privilege to be associated with every one of these individuals, who have all tirelessly dedicated themselves to this crusade, often at great sacrifice in their own lives. What has been accomplished as a group over the past couple of years is far greater than the sum of the parts.

By whatever name you choose - "naked short selling", "failures-to-deliver", or "stock counterfeiting", this is really just good-old fashioned fraud, and make no mistake, it is rampant, widespread, massive, and a very real threat to our country's financial security.

In the very first article I wrote on the topic, I described it as "Financial Terrorism". At the time, I was worried that the phrase might border on hyperbole, but now, over two years later, I have come to realize that, if anything, I was understating the scope of the problem.

We....every one of us who believe in America, have to continue fighting this battle as if our country's life depended on it, and in many ways, it does.

And that's the Faulking Truth.

Well said Mark, I beleive we have turned the corner and that the genie is a hell of a lot bigger than the bottle she came in. Good luck with the book, I am anxiously awaiting my signed edition.

Dave, my comments on Patrick apply equally to you (and the others who have been in the forefront - you know who you are)...if not more so. Except of course, for the fact that he's wealthy and well-known, and we're struggling and obscure.

Other than that...pretty much even.

Mark,

I think that this article was perfect. Many times we overlook the integrity of the person and what motivates them and the article was able to bring that out about PB. PB generally overloooks the leadership he brings to the table and is humbled by this publicity. Fact is, every word of encouragement and support is deserved for him. I am happy to be part of teh team.
